     Cook County is located in Illinois and has a population of  5,376,741 people  (Chicago has 2,896,016 and the surrounding suburbs have 2,480,725).   It is the second most populous county in the nation and is projected to have 5,505,000 people by 2010.  The total area of Cook County is made up of 956 square miles (City of Chicago - 227 square miles and Suburban areas - 729 square miles).  There are 140 municipalities (including Chicago) in Cook County.

     The Cook County Sheriff's Office is one of the largest public safety agencies in the United States.  It has more than 6,000 employees who perform a number of functions within the criminal justice system.

     The Sheriff's Police started in May 1831 when John Kinsey became the first Sheriff of Cook County.  The Cook County Sheriff's Police department is the third largest police department in Illinois.  It has approximately 700 Police Officers.
